Pune sends us a noticeably different mix from anywhere else in Maharashtra, and it follows from what the city makes.

Engineered and metal products. Pune is India's automotive and engineering belt, and a lot of what reaches us is machined, brushed, anodised or chromed. Metal is the hardest common surface to light, because a polished face does not reflect light, it reflects the room: the softbox, the ceiling, the tripod, the photographer. Getting a clean frame means shooting through large diffusion and controlling every reflection, which is time on set rather than time in editing. It is also why a quote for metal parts that matches a quote for cartons is a quote from someone who has not shot metal.

Components and industrial goods. These sell to buyers who are assessing build quality before they will even enquire, which changes the brief completely. Fewer hero shots, more evidence: honest close detail on the thread, the weld, the finish, the tolerance, and a scale frame so nobody has to guess the size. A lot of this catalogue ends up on IndiaMART rather than a consumer marketplace, where the photography is earning an enquiry rather than closing a sale.

Appliances and consumer D2C. Pune has a real D2C scene alongside the industrial base. Appliances combine the worst of both: a glossy plastic body that shows every fingerprint, a metal trim that reflects, and a buyer who wants to see it in use. These need the full slot set rather than a single main image, which is covered in which angles actually sell.

Three hours away, which changes things

Pune to our Thane studio is about 150 km on the expressway. That is close enough to matter, and it is the practical difference between working with us and working with a studio at the other end of the country.

You can attend. Founders from Pune do drive down for the first session, and for a technical product that is genuinely useful, because the person who knows which angle shows the tolerance is standing next to the camera instead of describing it over email. It also means product can be driven down rather than couriered, which matters for anything heavy, fragile or expensive enough that you would rather not hand it to a transporter.

For everything else the courier-in process works the same as it does anywhere: send the products, we shoot and retouch, files come back with the raw frames in five to seven working days. Rates run Rs 500 to Rs 1,500 per image, moving with how difficult the surface is to light, which for machined metal is the top of that range and worth knowing before you compare quotes.
