Chennai has one of the deepest benches of commercial photographers in the country, and the market splits three ways. Catalogue specialists price per image and work at volume for Amazon and Flipkart sellers. Studio operations in areas like Pallikaranai run full in-house setups. Individual commercial photographers work on a day rate and are usually pitching campaign work rather than catalogue work.

Knowing which of the three you need saves the most money. Justdial alone lists over 1,700 product photographers in the city, and comparing a day rate against a per-image rate is where most of the confusion comes from. For thirty SKUs the per-product maths usually wins. For eight hero shots for a launch, the day rate often does.
