What makes a flat lay harder than it looks
Everything in frame competes for attention. A prop that looks good in the room can pull the eye off the product, so each element has to earn its place.
Top-down light flattens a product quickly. Without a shadow direction, depth disappears and a jar or box reads as a sticker on a colour.
Straight lines show every error. A box that is a few degrees off square, or a ribbon that sits badly, is obvious from above.
A flat lay also has to survive being cropped. The same frame is used for a website banner, a square feed post and a story, so the layout needs room around the product for all three.
How we shoot a flat lay
- Surface and colour chosen from the brand palette before the shoot day, so the flat lay looks like the brand and not like a stock backdrop.
- Props kept to what explains the product: ingredients, a comb beside a hair supplement, a ribbon on a gift item.
- Shadow direction set on purpose, so the product has depth and the label stays readable.
- Open-box and hamper layouts arranged so every item in the set is still identifiable.
- Composition left open on one side so the image can be cropped for a banner, a square post and a story.

A flat lay is a photograph taken from directly above, with the product and props arranged on a flat surface. It is used for gift sets, open boxes, ingredient stories and social grids.Get a custom quote here.
Which products work best as a flat lay?
Gift sets and hampers, beauty and personal care ranges, supplements, accessories and anything sold as a set. Tall or rounded products usually need an angled shot as well.
Do you supply the props and backgrounds?
Yes. We source surfaces and props to match your brand palette. Tell us the mood and the colours, and send any brand elements you want in frame.
Can the same shoot also cover white background and lifestyle shots?
Yes. A flat lay is usually shot alongside the standard listing images in one booking, so the setup time is shared.
