What commercial use actually changes
Editorial photography is licensed narrowly, often for a single publication or a limited time, and usually cannot be reused in an ad or on packaging without a separate agreement. Commercial product photography is shot and licensed for exactly that: reuse across your own catalogue, ads, packaging and website, without a second negotiation every time you want to use the image somewhere new.
That changes what gets planned into the shoot. Since the images are meant for repeated business use rather than a single placement, coverage tends to be broader (multiple angles, formats and crops) so the same shoot serves the catalogue, the site and an ad campaign without a reshoot for each.
It is also the default kind of shoot most brands actually need. Most product photography enquiries, even when the word 'commercial' is never used, are asking for exactly this: images they can use freely across their own business.
